Using students as role models has proved to be one of the big success stories of Aimhigher. Current HE students working as ambassadors, mentors and tutors provide both the medium and the message for the groups that they work with - that anyone with the potential to benefit from it, can progress to higher education.
Student mentors work in a variety of ways. They visit the school each week to work 1:1 with young people, or with very small groups. E-mentors work with young people via email, providing the same support, encouragement and motivation as face to face mentoring. Student tutors work in the classroom alongside a qualified teacher, providing additional support in a subject that they have studied to a high level.
The HE students themselves gain from both their experience in school and from the training they receive for this valuable work. The Mentoring & Tutoring strand provides training for HE and FE students involved in Aimhigher mentoring and tutoring activities and has established a shared pool of training materials. It also develops, coordinates and organises mentoring and tutoring programmes for young people across the Area.
The strand is led by Bristol University.
