Uniworld© CD Rom

Uni World
© Keele University 2001

The HEIST award-winning Uniworld© CD Rom is a fully interactive classroom resource on Higher Education developed by Keele University for use with Years 8 and 9.  Uniworld© was intended to be used in Part 4 PSE classes and to have links to this and other aspects of the National Curriculum.  Uniworld© has a space theme and is structured into four sections with differentiated activities presented at regular intervals.  Navigated by conventional mouse and keyboard commands, information is presented and rehearsed in a variety of ways including video clips, FAQs, puzzles and problems, memory tests.  Section one gives general information about Higher Education, Section two, through FAQs, aims to directly address common misconceptions that young people have about Higher Education, Section three shows graduate careers and career paths while Section four is an interactive board game based on a university campus of the future.

After assessing the suitability of Uniworld© though a pilot study with Year 8 students, the Aimhigher West Area Partnership has customised Uniworld© to include clips of students from partner higher education institutions speaking about undergraduate life and virtual tours around some partner university facilities.

Uniworld© is available for use in all schools in the Aimhigher West Area.

Aspiration and Awareness Raising Resources

'What's Stopping You'

The aims of ‘What’s Stopping You?’ are to:

  • Raise apirations
  • Offer positive role Frameworks
  • Make links between studying and the career world

What’s Stopping You? Teaching Resource

What’s Stopping You? is an exciting teaching resource produced by the Aimhigher West Area Partnership for use in all partnership schools and colleges. It is an interactive learning tool primarily aimed at students from Year 9 to Year 13, but could also be used in Years 7 and 8.

The resource looks at perceived barriers to progression onto higher education, such as debt, disability and access, peer pressure, students not thinking they are the university type, etc.  It was developed for use in PSHE lessons, but it is a flexible resource that could be used in other ways.

The resource was developed to raise aspirations and provide information about higher education and enable learners to make an informed choice about their future at an age when they are most likely to be influenced positively.

The resource consists of a DVD and a linked lesson plan.

It'sUP2U

The aims of ‘It’sUP2u’ are to

  • Raise aspirations
  • Answer queries about studying at further and higher education
  • Make links between a subject and educational and career path

A mini-prospectus primarily aimed at 11-14 year-olds originally created by the University of Portsmouth and adapted by the Aimhigher West Area Partnership to give young people a flavour of university life and to help them choose which GCSEs to study.

The publication, ‘It’sUP2u,’ was designed to inform a younger age group about the opportunities offered by college and university education and to highlight the importance of choosing the right GCSE’s to plan their future careers.  It contains details of core GCSE subjects, optional choices and vocational options with information about what type of employment and career each qualification can lead to.  It aims to provide an insight into what life is like at university, answering questions such as, what is University, what do I pay for and where will I live?

Although the prospectus was primarily aimed at 11-14 year-olds, it has been found to be very useful to an older target audience and is suitable for use in schools and colleges from ages 11-19.
